Artist: Anselmo Ballester
Important Added Info: Note that this incredible poster is dated 1941, so it was released in Italy during World War II. That would likely explain why we have never seen this poster before, because Italian posters from World War II and earlier incredibly rare! We previously auctioned this poster, and the person who won it has reconsigned it, so it is still the only example of the poster we have ever auctioned. When we auctioned it the first time, some collectors thought that it could be a re-release, but we had much back and forth with Italian experts, and the evidence seems very strong that this poster is indeed from the first Italian release (but we can't say that with 100% certainty). Also note that this poster measures 27 3/4" x 39 1/2" [70 x 100 cm] and that this poster has been paperbacked. Note that this poster (because it has been paperbacked) can only be shipped in either a very large flat package (which would be the safest way) or in a very wide tube (so it does not have to be rolled at all tightly). Please bear in mind the additional expense of sending this item in a large flat package or wide tube before placing a bid on this poster.

What IS paperbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had been folded like a U.S. one-sheet and it had many creases and scuffs on the folds, with some fine surface paper loss. There was a 6" tear in the middle of the right border. The top border was folded back and stapled at one time. Other than the above, the poster was in pretty nice condition prior to paperbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above (a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster). I can well understand someone leaving this historic and beautiful poster as it is, and I can also understand someone choosing to have restoration performed to the foldlines, because afterward, it will display magnificently!
