Popeye is the spinach eating super strong sailor character created by Elzie Crisler Segar (E.C. Segar) in 1929 in his newspaper comic strip called "Thimble Theatre" (later changed to "Popeye the Sailor"). He first appeared on screen in a 1933 Max Fleischer Betty Boop cartoon aptly titled "Popeye the Sailor", and he was an instant hit, and over the years, he appeared in hundreds of theatrical and television animated cartoons, comic strips, and movies. He was portrayed by Robin Williams in the 1980 movie Popeye. Those who only know the character from the cartoons might think he was illiterate and did little except fight Bluto (later named "Brutus"), but actually, in the wonderful comic strip in the 1930s, he was very philosophical and the strip had many intricate story lines, with very little fighting!
Important Added Info: Note that this lot of stills also includes a 35mm slide, and a 1-page ad supplement (not pictured).
