An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Poster Cloth Banner (cloth; measures 35 1/2" x 119") (Learn More) Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, the classic 1925 Fred Niblo & Alfred Raboch silent religious epic ("A tale of the Christ by General Lew Wallace"; "A tale of the life of Christ"; "Never will I forget thee"; "A doomed slave, his spirit was unbroken"; "The Great Chariot Race"; "Before the chariot race... Esther bids godspeed to Ben-Hur"; "Produced from the scenario of Carey Wilson. Erlanger, Charles B. Dillingham & Florenz Ziegfeld Jr."; it includes the famous sea battle and chariot race that the later version of this movie is most famous for) starring Ramon Novarro (in the title role as Ben-Hur), Betty Bronson (as Mary), May McAvoy (as Esther), Francis X. Bushman (as Messala), Carmel Myers (as Iras), Kathleen Key (as Tirzah), Frank Currier, Claire McDowell, Clark Gable (as a Roman guard; in one of his 14 uncredited roles prior to making his real debut in 1931's "The Painted Desert"), and Claude Payton (as Jesus Christ). Note that this movie was advertised as being "Filmed in its entirety in Italy", but actually, several of the scenes were filmed in Hollywood! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good. The banner was stored folded for many years. There is significant wear in a line at the top of the "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer" credit, and down the space between the words "Metro" and "Goldwyn". There are creases and scuffs along all the other foldlines and some scattered throughout the poster. There are metal "grommets" around the edges of the poster (these allowed theaters to hang these cloth banners on hooks). Each corner of the poster had the poster folded under before the metal grommet was inserted (this was standard at the time, and gave the grommet twice as much material to hold onto, so they did not tear near as much). The material is still folded under, and the grommet could be removed and the material unfolded. Someone tried to remove the one in the top left corner, but tore the material in doing so, so they left the other three corners alone. Obviously, this poster has some significant defects as noted above, but it is mostly "all there" and the defects are not very distracting and help visually establish that the poster is 83 years old (and I doubt there is another of these banners in existence!).
