Date Sold 3/24/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Saint in London, the 1939 John Paddy Carstairs English/U.S. England detective crime mystery thriller ("From the story 'The Million Pound Day' by Leslie Charteris"; in this entry, The Saint returns to London, where he goes after a man who appears to be someone who cheats rich people while gambling at cards, but it turns out he is also a counterfeiter) starring George Sanders (in the title role as Simon Templar/The Saint), Sally Gray, David Burns, Gordon McLeod, Athene Seyler, Henry Oscar, and Hugh McDermott. Note that this was the second of the "Saint" movies made by RKO, based on Leslie Charteris' classic character, The Saint (the first of these was in 1938, The Saint in New York, where Louis Hayward played the title role, and then George Sanders took over). However, Charteris often disagreed with any story changes made by RKO and with Sanders' interpretation of his character. Because of this (and to save on royalty fees), the 1941 film "The Saint in Palm Springs" was the last of the series produced by RKO. Instead, they made "The Gay Falcon", which obviously starred the exact same character, but with the name changed (and there were many more in that series). Mr. Charteris threatened to sue RKO over this but the matter was settled out-of-court, and in 1953, RKO handled U.S. distribution for the English film "The Saint's Return" (also known as "The Saint's Girl Friday"), which starred Louis Hayward, who had played The Saint in the first RKO movie! George Sanders starred in four movies as The Falcon. After the fourth movie, the role of The Falcon was passed from George Sanders (who apparently had tired of this role, and wanted to leave) to Tom Conway (they played brothers in a movie called "The Falcon's Brother", and in real life they were brothers!; it had George Sanders' character killed, and his brother, played by Tom Conway, shows up and solves his murder, and becomes the "new" Falcon; and Conway went on to make a total of twelve Falcon movies). Important Added Info: Note that this card has a stamp on the back that indicates it came from the legendary horror/sci-fi collection of Ron Borst (the stamp reads "FROM THE COLLECTION OF Ronald V. Borst")! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. The card was lightly folded down the middle at one time. There are pinholes and smudges around the edges. There are dot stains in the top center, including a few in Sanders' forehead. There is an enlarged pinhole at top center in the background, and smudges and dot stains in the background of the center boxes, with an enlarged pinhole in one of those (see our images). Note that this lobby card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back! This is the kind of card that responds really well to restoration! It is likely that much of the smudges and dot stains can be removed through chemical means, and afterwards, the card will look great, and likely require very little paint restoration.
