An Original Vintage Theatrical 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Lana Turner (born Julia Jean Mildred Frances Turner) was an actress from the 1930s to the 1990s. She was born in 1921 in Idaho, and her father was murdered when she was a young girl, and her mother moved to California. In 1937, she was discovered at a soda fountain (not Schwab's, but one close by), and she had a small role in 1937's "They Won't Forget", and she became very popular very quickly. She remained a top leading actress for over 20 years, though her turbulent personal life definitely affected her career (including the murder of her violent gangster lover, Johnny Stompanato, by her own 14 year old daughter Cheryl Crane, and also her eight husbands, the first of which was bandleader Artie Shaw, who himself was married eight times, including to Ava Gardner!). Some of her movies include: The Postman Always Rings Twice, Imitation of Life, The Bad and the Beautiful, Peyton Place (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. She passed away in 1995 at the age of 74. Important Added Info: Note that this wonderful 1937 photo shows 16 year old Lana Turner as she looked when she was discovered by Mervyn LeRoy. She is playing tennis at Hollywood High. Legend has it that she was discovered at the soda fountain near Schwab's drugstore (see above), but this photo would seem to dispute that, given that it was taken at the time. We know for certain that it is from 1937, because the snipe on the back refers to Turner's first movie "They Won't Forget" as "The Deep South", which was changed in the middle of 1937, because the movie was released in July 1937 as "They Won't Forget", so we imagine this still is from early in the filming when it still had the working title. Also, the snipe on the still refers to Turner as being 17, but she was actually 16 (she would not turn 17 until February 1938, around six months after the movie opened). We imagine they were adding a year to her age so she wouldn't look "too young". Finally, note that Turner clearly changed appearance between 1937 and just a couple of years later, once she had been made over by Hollywood, and we think few people would recognize her from this image if they were not told it was her!
