Date Sold 11/4/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) House of Frankenstein, the 1944 Erle C. Kenton Universal monster horror thriller ("All together...!"; "Frankenstein's Monster! The Wolf Man! Dracula! The Hunchback! The Mad Doctor!"; "Based on a Story by Curt Siodmak"; the sixth Universal Frankenstein movie, and this was the first "all-star" movie, with all of its best monsters brought together in a single movie!) starring Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr. (as Lawrence Talbot, the Wolfman), John Carradine (as Dracula), J. Carroll Naish (as Daniel, the hunchback), Anne Gwynne, Peter Coe, Elena Verdugo, Lionel Atwill (Atwill must have had a terrible agent that he ended up behind Peter Coe, and Elena Verdugo in the billing!), Michael Mark, Frank Reicher, Charles Wagenheim, William Edmunds, Belle Mitchell, Sig Ruman, and Glenn Strange (as "Frankenstein's monster"). At least Atwill did better than poor Glenn Strange, who played the Frankenstein monster, and didn't even receive billing! Also, is it just me, or is it the height of insensitivity that a "hunchback" was treated as a monster on a par with Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Wolf Man? Also, why in the world did Glenn Strange not get billing on the posters? NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release posters on this Universal horror title have always been as scarce or more scarce as any of the other 1940s Universal titles, but for unknown reasons, the window card is remarkably scarce! We auctioned this exact window card in 2016, and at that time, we had never auctioned it before. Now, the person who bought it from us in 2016 has re-consigned it, so this is still the ONLY example of this card we have ever auctioned! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. Prior to paperbacking, the window card had been trimmed to 13" x 16". But fortunately, it was almost only blank areas that were trimmed off. There was 3/8" trimmed from the top edge of the image, and that was the only image area missing. This affected the very top of the Wolfman's head and the very top of the word "TOGETHER". Otherwise, all of the image was present. There was a tiny bit of paper loss and some small surface paper loss scattered in the upper left background area. There was a pinhole in the left of Frankenstein's forehead. There was a thin drip water stain that started in the "R" of "TOGETHER" and ran down through Frankenstein's hand and stopped just above the title. There were some other tiny stains and scuffs scattered through the image. The entire card had darkened, and the orange in the bottom half of the letters of the title had greatly faded. Overall, the window card was in fair condition prior to paperbacking. The person who restored the window card replaced the borders and the thin strip of missing image along the top edge was expertly recreated. The orange at the bottom of the letters of the title was restored, and some of the other solid colored areas had paint applied as well. Restoration was also performed to the other small defects described above. The poster has definitely had significant restoration, but it is the only example of it we have ever seen, so it might be many, many years before another example comes to auction. You can clearly tell that it has had much restoration, but it will still display well on the new owner's wall. But please read the above carefully and look closely at our super-sized image before placing a bid on this incredibly rare poster! Learn More about condition grades
