An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 41" [71 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) A Mysterious Yarn ("The Tale of the Sweater"), the 1917 Gregory La Cava Katzenjammer Kids silent animated animation cartoon comedy short. Note that Katzenjammer Kids was created in 1897 by Rudolph Dirks for the Sunday supplement of William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal. It was based on Wilhelm Busch's Max and Moritz and became one of the longest running Sunday comic strips in American history. Between December 1916 and August 1918, a total of 37 Katzenjammer Kids silent cartoon shorts were produced by William Randolph Hearst's own cartoon studio International Film Service. All Katzenjammer Kids cartoons from International Film Services were directed (and likely also animated) by Gregory La Cava. Note that we have auctioned a one-sheet for this cartoon, and the bottom of the poster advertises "on the same reel" Lace Making, with the tagline that says "Striking views showing how the war has developed this branch of American textiles". Since the images advertised in the cartoon all show the kids doing pranks involving yarn, we think it is highly likely that this cartoon was some kind of tie-in commissioned by lace manufacturers, and that viewers got to see both the cartoon and a brief short about how lace was made! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this cartoon is incredibly rare. We have never previously auctioned any movie paper items from this until we received this one-sheet! Also note that this one-sheet measures 28" x 41" [71 x 104 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at the top crossfold and tiny paper loss at the other two crossfolds. It was folded in half an extra time, and there was some separation and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of several folds, with some tears and small paper loss in the borders, more so in the bottom blank border. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
