Date Sold 8/3/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Broken Lullaby (released in other English-speaking countries as "The Man I Killed"), the 1932 Ernst Lubitsch World War I (WWI) melodrama (written by Samson Raphaelson; about a French musical student who is goes into the military and who ends up killing a German soldier who was a classmate of his, and he travels to Germany to meet the young man's family) starring Lionel Barrymore, Nancy Carroll, Phillips Holmes, Louise Carter, and Zasu Pitts. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", retitled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that ANY U.S. movie paper items from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a window card, two trolley cards, a different scene card, and four stills from this movie (and NO other U.S. movie paper) until we received this second lobby card! Note that the card has the international title of "The Man I Killed" printed on it. That may mean that it was used in another country that used this title, or it could be that the movie was released in the U.S. under both titles. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. The entire card has darkened somewhat. It has tack holes, smudges, and small stains around the edges. There are a few tiny creases and scuffs scattered in the image. This is the sort of card that responds really well to professional restoration. It is likely that much or all of the smudges and stains can be removed through chemical means, and of course, most of the pinholes are in the blank borders, and after proper restoration, the card will display well. Please look closely at our images of the front and back of this card before bidding. Note that this card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back!
