A Linenbacked French Special Poster (measures 34 1/4" x 51 1/2" [87 x 131 cm]) (Learn More) David Ossipovitch Widhopff was a Russian-French painter, caricaturist and poster artist from the 1880s to the 1930s. He exhibited at the Paris Salons of 1888, 1891 and 1893. He traveled to Brazil and set up a fine-arts school in the state of Para, and on his return to Paris, he visited Montmartre and became friends with Alfons Mucha and Leon Deschamps (editor of La Plume). At the turn of the century, Widhopff created posters for Ambroise Vollard, one of the most important dealers in French contemporary art in the Twentieth century. During his lifetime, Widhopff earned acclaim for his diverse methods of expression. His uniqueness was his ability to work equally well with both pencil as well as the brush, and his drawings are known for their lively expressions, colorful imagery and rich humor. Widhopff passed away in 1933 at the age of 66. Artist: David Ossipovitch Widhopff Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had some unevenly spaced horizontal folds, and it had darkened somewhat. It had a few small stains and light smudges in the background areas, and some creases in the woman's dress. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking.
