An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Military One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock San Francisco California suspense obsessive love crime mystery thriller ("Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece"; "Based upon the novel D'Entre Les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac"; "Music by Bernard Herrmann"; about a man with a fear of heights who is caught up in a murder, or is he?, and he meets a woman who looks very similar to the "dead girl", and he becomes obsessed with solving the mystery) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Kim Novak (in a dual role), Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Note that John Whitney Sr. (who did the spiral title sequence for the movie) also did the spiral art for the posters from this movie, which was utilized by the poster artist Saul Bass. Also note that Alfred Hitchcock did not make a final decision on what to name this movie until the last minute! At various times, it had working titles of Darkling I Listen, Fear and Trembling, From Among the Dead, and Illicit Darkening. Many of the early advertising stills don't have a title at all, but say "An Alfred Hitchcock Production". Personally, we think "Vertigo" is a better title than any of those other four! Finally, note that critical acclaim for this movie has consistently risen in the years since it was first released. In fact, in the 2012 "Sight and Sound" poll of top movie critics, Vertigo was declared to be the number one film of all time, over Citizen Kane, and every other masterpiece! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning! This was found with a group of one-sheets that were from a California Air Force Base, and almost EVERY single one-sheet from that group were from 1958 (a few were from 1957)! It seems a certainty that someone at the Air Force base put them in a stack in 1958 and that they remained there for decades! There is this Vertigo military one-sheet, and there were seven more that we auctioned individually in our auctions that ended 11-22-2022, and also a number of much lesser ones that were in our bulk lot auctions that ended 11-27-2022, and then there are no more from this amazing find! This is a military one-sheet. Military one-sheets were printed at the same time as the regular U.S. one-sheets when the movie was first released. They were made to be used on U.S. military installations. Sometimes the poster has small writing at the bottom that says "For Distribution and Use at U.S. Military Establishments Only", and sometimes they just have "Litho in U.S.A." or "Printed in U.S.A." in small letters in the lower right or lower left (most often, the ones that were used in the 1950s [during the Korean war and after] have "Litho in U.S.A.", and the ones that were used in the 1960s [before and during the Vietnam war] have "Printed in U.S.A.). However, this poster has nothing printed at the bottom. Condition: very good. The poster was folded in half an extra time. It has a tiny tear in the lower left background area, an enlarged pinhole in the background below the "M" of "KIM", and some creases along the folds and small separation at the top center crossfold. Otherwise the poster is in really nice condition and it has never had any restoration! Learn More about condition grades
