Date Sold 8/19/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Paperbacked Insert Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) one of three John Wayne stock inserts used by theaters to advertise re-released (and in some countries, the first release) John Wayne cowboy western movies that he made for Lone Star Pictures in 1933 and 1934. The first of these inserts was made by Monogram when they re-released those Lone Star Pictures sometime between 1935 and 1939 (there are similar one-sheets for each of those titles, but they only made this generic insert for those re-releases), and it has a great headshot image of John Wayne at the top and artwork at the bottom. We believe the other two inserts date to the mid 1940s (both have solely "A Lone Star Western Re-release" on them), when he had even greater success with his World War II movies, and one of those inserts is similar to the 1930s insert, but with the elements rearranged, and the other has a waist-high image of Wayne pointing a gun. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that in the case of this particular stock poster, the bottom section was overprinted with the title and credits for The Lucky Texan, the 1934 Robert N. Bradbury (billed as "R.N. Bradbury") cowboy western ("Where life was raw and might was law!"; Wayne plays a blacksmith who discovers a gold mine, and almost has it stolen by crooks, but recovers it, and finds love with a pretty woman) starring John Wayne, Barbara Sheldon, Lloyd Whitlock, George 'Gabby' Hayes, and Yakima Canutt. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would have a strong chance of lessening its condition, so we will only send it in a large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had some light smudges scattered throughout, including in Wayne's face. It had some tears and creases around the edges and creases in the top background area. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. Given the poster's significant defects, the restorer did a really nice job, because it displays pretty well from a reasonable viewing distance, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
