An Original Vintage Theatrical 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Al Jolson was a legendary actor/singer from the 1910s to the 1940s. He started in vaudeville, performing in minstrel shows in blackface, and later was the number one star of Broadway in the 1920s, and was called "the world's greatest entertainer", and Warner Bros. chose him to star in the first "talking movie", The Jazz Singer, which was based on a play about Jolson's life (but oddly, George Jessel played the role on Broadway!). He had a string of hit movies in the 1930s, and he married Ruby Keeler, and as her star ascended, his declined (see "A Star is Born", for a story loosely based on their marriage). During World War II, he entertained the troops overseas, and afterwards, he was "re-discovered", and a musical biography of his life was made, "The Jolson Story", with Larry Parks in the lead role, lip synching Jolson's own singing, and a sequel was made, "Jolson Sings Again". He passed away in 1950 at the age of 64. Important Added Info: Note that this still has a FACSIMILE autograph that is within the printing of the still (the still has NOT been personally autographed). Also note that this still measures 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm]. Note that not only does our current auction of 999 stills represent the absolute finest selection we have ever had in terms of quality of image and film, but it also represents the finest CONDITION group of stills we have ever had! Half of the stills are graded as being in "very good to fine" condition (which is our highest grade for vintage stills), but we were very strict on this, because otherwise, perhaps two thirds or three quarters of the stills would have received this grade! We downgraded stills to "very good" for pretty minor defects, and many of these might have received our "very good to fine" grade in the past. And the half of the stills that ARE in very good to fine condition would likely be graded "mint" by any other auction! This is the finest group of stills I have ever seen, and I can only hope to equal it someday! Condition: good. There are some creases and stains scattered in the still (see our image).
