An Undated (probably 1960s) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Export (printed for use in Spanish speaking countries) Movie Poster (measures 19 3/4" x 27 1/2" [50 x 70 cm]) (Learn More) Sands of Iwo Jima, the classic 1950 Allan Dwan World War II (WWII) United States Marine Corps (USMC) military action thriller ("A great human story... Makes a mighty motion picture!"; "The Marines have landed... And the situation is well in hand!"; "The Marines' Greatest Hour!") starring John Wayne (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), John Agar, Adele Mara, Forrest Tucker, Wally Cassell, James Brown (NOT the famous singer!), Richard Webb, Arthur Franz, Julie Bishop, James Holden, Peter Coe, and Richard Jaeckel NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an unusual poster that is shrouded in mystery! It was printed in Italy, but has large English language credits, but has Spanish writing at the top! Perhaps it was printed in Italy for use when the movie was re-released in Spanish speaking countries in the 1960s, but that is just a guess. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that it is difficult to accurately date Italian posters, and some unmarked re-release posters can be extremely difficult to distinguish from first releases, so please bear that in mind before you place a bid. We used our best information to date this poster, but we can't always guarantee that the Italian posters we sell are not from an unmarked re-release, but this will only prove to be true in a very tiny number of cases. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfold and creases and scuffs scattered down the vertical foldline, with pinholes in the corners. It had blue writing on the back of the middle of the right border that bled through to the front (see our image). Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
