Important Added Info: Note that this classic movie was first released in Belgium in 1940, and the Germans invaded France and Belgium right around the same time, in May of that year. The posters were printed with the "Metro Goldwyn Mayer" logo at bottom right, and it is known that some goodly number of the posters were overprinted with solid black over the logo (some long time collectors say it was because MGM was owned partially by Jewish people, and that distributor name would have offended the Nazis). There are a very few examples of this poster without the studio name overprinted, and it seems likely those were posters that were never used, so they did not need to be overprinted. Most collectors accept this overprinting as "part of the poster", and not a defect, since almost all examples of this poster have this same overprinting. Another knowledgeable collector has suggested to us that he believes that the posters without the overprinting actually date from 1949 (which was when the movie first played in Belgium), and that they simply used the plates designed for an intended release in 1940, which may or may not have occurred. He further states that he believes that the overprinted posters are actually from 1954, at which time the same plates were used, but the MGM was overprinted because MGM was no longer the distributor of the movie in Belgium (and because they added a Loews credit, and that was added in the U.S. for the 1954 re-release). Certainly, there is much uncertainty about this poster as to exactly when it is from and what is the meaning of the overprinting, and we urge anyone with any additional knowledge about either matter to contact us, so we can post it here. Based on the above, our best guess is that (because this poster does have the overprinted logo at bottom right) it dates from 1954 and is from the second Belgian release. Finally, note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: very good. There are diagonal creases at lower left extending into the credits area and there are minor creases throughout the poster. Overall, the poster is in pretty nice condition and it displays pretty well and if one had it linenbacked it would look great!
