An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style Y Thirty by Forty Movie Poster (30x40; measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief, the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock romantic crime mystery thriller ("It's a web of romance and suspense that spins you from delight to danger - then spirals to an explosive climax on the fabulous Riviera!"; "Based on the novel by David Dodge"; "Screenplay by John Michael Hayes"; about a retired jewel thief living on the Riviera, and there is a string of daring jewel robberies, so naturally, he is the lead suspect, and he decides to find the true thief himself, and he is aided by a beautiful rich young woman and her mother!) starring Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Jessie Royce Landis, John Williams, Charles Vanel, Brigitte Auber, Rene Blancard, Georgette Anys, and Jean Martinelli. Note that Cary Grant had announced his retirement from movies in 1953, but he was lured out of retirement by Hitchcock to make this one. Also note that Jessie Royce Landis, who had played Grant's mother in "North by Northwest", this time played his potential mother-in-law, and yet, she was only eight years older than Grant, who had aged very well! Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of the style Z 30x40 poster (and the last one was 8 years ago, when it sold for $1,805), but we have NEVER auctioned this style Y 30x40 poster (which has a completely different image from both the style Z 30x40 and the regular one-sheet for this movie)! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had creases across the top and bottom borders, and some creases scattered throughout the poster, including ones in the stars' faces. There were a few small tears in the borders, with tiny paper loss in the bottom right corner. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was linenbacked with no restoration and no excess, surely done for preservation rather than conservation. This incredibly rare poster displays pretty well from a reasonable viewing distance, so certainly, the new owner can display it as it is, or one might choose to have additional restoration performed, either with or without re-backing the poster.
