An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Frankenstein, the classic 1931 James Whale Universal monster horror thriller ("The monster that terrorized the world!"; "The Man Who Made a Monster"; "Warning! The monster is loose!"; "Based upon the Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Story"; "Adapted by John L. Balderston from the play by Peggy Webling"; the first of the Universal "Frankenstein" movies, and regarded as one of the finer movies of any genre, in large part due to the marvelous acting of Boris Karloff, and the marvelous direction of James Whale!) starring Colin Clive (as Dr. Herbert V. Frankenstein), Boris Karloff (as the Frankenstein monster), Edward Van Sloan, Fredric Kerr, Mae Clarke, Dwight Frye (extremely memorable as Fritz), and John Boles

Important Added Info: Note that there seems to be no doubt that this is the single most desirable lobby card there is! The one-sheet from this movie almost never changes hands, and when it does, it is for an astronomical figure. We have only previously auctioned one example of this first release title card, and that was 31 years ago! Another auction house auctioned an example of this in 2020, and that card had a number of quite noticeable defects, including a large stain in the credits and much scuffing in the title (and some stains and scuffs scattered throughout), and yet that card was reported to have sold for $72,000, and this card is clearly in better condition! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

Condition: good to very good. The entire card has darkened somewhat, typical of Universal lobby cards of this period. The card has a brown stain in the middle of the left blank border. It has two tack holes in the upper center, one in the background and one in the monster's shoulder, with tiny surface paper loss below it. There are some scuffs in the monster's clothes. There are faint smudges and scuffs scattered throughout, more so around the edges. The theater that used this card used the back of the card to advertise another movie, by writing "TODAY" and the stars and the title in green paint on the back. This paint does not show through to the front. The paint absolutely can be removed from the back, but it is a fascinating reminder of just how unappreciated and non-valued lobby cards were at this time. The theater employee needed a piece of paper, and this title card seemed as good as anything! Surely this helps explain why this card and so many other cards of this period are so incredibly rare. Obviously, the new owner of this card can choose to leave the card exactly as it is (100% unrestored), or have any amount of restoration performed to it. The owner will be able to choose exactly what restoration to have done, and just as important, what restorer to choose to perform that restoration. So often, auctions take these decisions out of the hands of bidders, where they have to accept the restoration that was performed, but this card was never touched. It will surely be the centerpiece of the new owner's collection!
