An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Cat People, the classic 1942 Jacques Tourneur human-feline romantic horror thriller ("She was one of the dreaded 'Cat People' -- doomed to slink and prowl and court by night... fearing always that a lover's kiss might change her into a snarling, clawing Killer!"; "She was marked with the curse of those who slink and court and kill by night!"; "A kiss could change her into a monstrous fang-and-claw killer!"; "To kiss her meant death by her own fangs and claws!"; "Beautiful, warm, glamorous by day, she dared not love - for her kisses might change to snarls, her embraces to the death grips of the awful 'Cat People' who stalk and strike by night! ... The Strangest Story You Ever Tried To Get Out Of Your Dreams!"; "Pretty Girl - Black Beast - They're One!"; "Written by DeWitt Bodeen"; produced by Val Lewton) starring Simone Simon, Kent Smith, Tom Conway, Jane Randolph, Jack Holt, and Mary Halsey. Note that when this movie was first announced by RKO Pictures in 1942, it was called "The Cat People" in the first trade ads, but it was released simply as "Cat People". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that any posters from the first release of this classic movie are extremely rare and expensive. Perhaps that was because there was a re-release which was made just ten years after the original, and probably whatever original 1942 paper was still around in 1952 was used up during that re-release, which would help explain why so little original 1942 movie paper still survives! We have only previously auctioned one example of this first release style B half-sheet, and that was 10 years ago, when it sold for $3,700! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we know it would definitely lessen its condition, so we will only send it in a very large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had extra folds along the regular ones, with creases and scuffs along the folds and some creases, smudges, and scuffs scattered throughout. It had paper loss in the bottom right corner that removed the "LT" of "HOLT" and the bottom of the "O", and the NSS number below it. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was well backed, but the restorer did not want to put lots of paint on the poster, so they focused on addressing the above defects, which I think was a very wise decision, because while you can clearly see signs of the defects from very close up, this incredibly rare poster displays well from a reasonable viewing distance. The restorer did recreate the missing paper and text in the bottom right corner and did a very nice job of it. I would think most collectors would be very happy to display this poster on their wall, but please bear in mind the above defects and the restoration it has had, and look at our super-sized image before bidding on this.
