An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 14" x 30" [36 x 76 cm]) (Learn More)

The Tales of Hoffmann, the 1951 Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger English dance ballet opera romantic fantasy adventure musical (based on the opera by Jacques Offenbach, which in turn is based on the short stories by E.T.A. Hoffmann) starring Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann, Leonide Massine, Robert Rounseville (in the title role as Hoffmann), Ludmilla Tcherina (billed as "Presenting Ludmilla Tcherina"), and Sir Thomas Beecham and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Note that this movie includes scenes of a fantasy island, and it was too costly to create such a set, so those scenes were done with the judicious use of matte paintings of the island!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this Australian daybill. The buyer of that one of those two posters had it linenbacked, and they have now reconsigned it to us, so this is still only one of two examples we have ever auctioned!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had discoloration scattered in some areas from exposure to moisture. There was scuffing scattered down the left, entering into the left edge of the image, mostly in the blue area. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
