An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Down Argentine Way, the 1940 Irving Cummings Argentina romantic musical comedy ("The musical extravaganza two continents 47have been waiting for!"; "Story by Rian James and Ralph Spence") starring Don Ameche, Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda, Charlotte Greenwood, Kay Aldridge (billed as "Katharine Aldridge"), J. Carrol Naish, Henry Stephenson, Leonid Kinskey, Chris-Pin Martin, and The Nicholas Brothers (Fayard & Harold). Note that while this movie did very well at the box office in the U.S., the people in Argentina hated it, and it was not even allowed to be shown there! This was because of many errors within the movie, and they also felt that the presence of Carmen Miranda made it seem like Argentina was a tropical country, which it certainly was not! Also note that there is an oddity to this movie. The movie paper has a 1938 copyright date, but the movie was not released until October 1940! We know that at least 10 months were spent filming the movie, but that still would not account for that two year gap. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that 32 years ago we auctioned an example of the style B one-sheet from this movie, but we have NEVER before auctioned this style A one-sheet, which has a completely different image!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had pretty minor fold wear, but it had two horizontal tears with tiny paper loss starting in the right of Ameche's face and extending across to the background above the dress. It had a similar tear running across the top of the last names of the top stars extending down through the top of the word "MIRANDA". Also, most of the blank borders were trimmed off, but the small text in the bottom border was preserved. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Also, the person who owned the poster treated it like it was a painting, and they stapled the excess linen to a stretcher, so there are many staple holes around the edges of the excess linen, but they do not affect the actual poster.
