Date Sold 11/6/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Toho Commercial Unfolded Japanese "B2" Movie Poster (printed for direct sale to the public; measures 21" x 29 1/2" [51 x 72 cm]) (Learn More) Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the classic 1977 Steven Spielberg (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) science fiction (sci-fi) alien UFO melodrama ("Close Encounter of the First Kind: Sighting of a UFO"; "Close Encounter of the Second Kind: Physical Evidence"; "Close Encounter of the Third Kind: Contact"; "We are not alone."; "Every 15 minutes, someone sees a UFO"; "Written and Directed by Steven Spielberg") starring Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Francois Truffaut (the famous French director, in an acting role; "as Lacombe"), Bob Balaban, and Cary Guffey (as the little boy). Note that Paul Schrader wrote the original screenplay for this movie, but Steven Spielberg made many changes to Schrader's script. Finally, Schrader asked that his name be taken off the screenplay, and since it had to have someone's name on it, Spielberg put his own name on the screenplay! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was produced by Toho, and while some theaters may have used it to promote the film, it was designed to be sold to the public, but only at theaters during the first release of the film and NOT outside of the theaters or after the end of the first release (similar to the rare "Starfall" Japanese commercial poster for Return of the Jedi, and similar to that poster, this poster has a FAR superior image to that of the U.S. posters for this title). It is far more rare than Japanese theatrical posters for the film (we have only auctioned it once before and that was in 2015 and it sold for $360!) Note also that this Japanese poster measures 21" x 29 1/2" [53 x 75 cm]. Condition: good. The poster was never folded. It has many light creases scattered throughout. It had small paper loss in the bottom corners, slightly extending into the black background, and someone glued a replacement piece to those corners. There is surface paper loss and a brown stain near the middle of the left border and someone put tape on the back of that area. The poster had surface paper loss in the top corners where tape was removed, and someone performed touch up to those areas. There are also some light creases scattered throughout the poster. They are not very noticeable when it is looked at head on, but they are very noticeable when you view the poster at a slight angle. In spite of the above defects and restoration, the poster can be displayed and enjoyed as it is, but bear in mind the condition of the poster and look at our super-sized image before bidding on it.
