An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 27 1/4" x 40 3/4" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Who is the Masked Dancer?, the 1920s poster. It is possible that this was for a play called The Masked Dancer or the 1924 film The Masked Dancer, but recent research indicates that it is likely promoting the 1920 film On With the Dance starring Mae Murray. We found a strange marketing campaign in many 1920 newspapers where the phrase "Who is the Masked Dancer" was added multiple times between articles and in the classifieds. This made searching rather difficult because of the many results. However, we finally found helpful theater ads. Apparently a gimmick at some theaters was to have a "personal appearance of The Masked Dancer" in person before the movie. Ads would say "Who is the masked dancer? Who is the masked dancer? Ask Mae Murray". While we cannot be 100% certain, we believe that this is a teaser poster for On With the Dance. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a group of stage play and movie posters from the 1920s that were discovered in May of 2013. We auctioned most of them in June of 2013, but there were some posters that were not auctioned at that time (a few of them duplicates of ones we auctioned then), which are being auctioned now, each in their own separate auction. Each of the posters is unfolded, but all have varying degrees of damage around the edges (see our individual condition description of each). All can be professionally linenbacked and restored, but we wanted to offer them unrestored, both so that the bidders could see exactly what condition each poster is in, and also so that the high bidder of each poster could choose the restorer of their choice, plus decide how much restoration each poster should have! Condition: fair. The poster has two horizontal folds near the middle. It has many tears and areas of paper loss around the edges, and it is somewhat fragile. Learn More about condition grades
