An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 1/2" x 41" [70 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Voltaire (also released as "The Affairs of Voltaire"), the 1933 John G. Adolfi France historical author literature biography melodrama ("The Greatest Actor of Today" [plays] "The Greatest Man of His Time"; "The affairs of history's strangest personality."; "A Warner Bros. & Vitaphone Picture"; set in the days before the French Revolution; famous French author Voltaire has fallen out of favor with King Louis XV because he has criticized the court's excesses; a woman whose father was unfairly executed comes to him and asks him to help her regain her father's estate and restore his good name, and Voltaire writes a play that tells the story of her father in an allegory, and it is performed for the King, and it causes him to see the error of his ways, and he restores the young lady's estate!) starring George Arliss (in the title role as Voltaire), Doris Kenyon (as Madame Pompadour, the king's mistress), Margaret Lindsay, Theodore Newton, Alan Mowbray, and Reginald Owen (as Louis XV)

Important Added Info: Note that this poster originated from the legendary "Carson Collection" assembled by Richard Allen between the late 1930s and the late 1980s. Mr. Allen was one of the very first movie poster collectors, starting in the mid 1930s, and in the 1970s and 1980s he worked to get an incredible collection of posters with wonderful art. He would seek out the finest examples of each poster and then have them paperbacked by museum restorers, using the finest conservation techniques. We auctioned this poster three years ago, and the person who purchased it has re-consigned it, so it is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned! Also note that this one-sheet measures 27 1/2" x 41" [70 x 104 cm]. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Also note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thin paper backing, it can be sent rolled in a tube, but it will be sent rolled with the image outward, because rolling it with the image inward would "bring back the folds".

What IS paperbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some pinholes around the edges. It had minor wear on the folds. It had small paper loss in the top of the "E" of "VOLTAIRE" and in the top right of the "E" and top left of the "I" of "VOLTAIRE". Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was paperbacked by the finest museum restorers (see above). After it was backed, it acquired a few tiny tears in the blank borders. It will display wonderfully on any collector's wall, but it needs to be handled carefully.
