A Linenbacked French Art Exhibition Poster (measures 46" x 62 1/2" [117 x 159 cm]) (Learn More) Salon D'Automne (literally translates to "Autumn Fair"), the 1928 French poster promoting an annual art exhibition which was held from November 4th through December 16th at the Grand Palais des Champs-Elysees (Grand Palais) in Paris, France. This poster features art of birds, paintbrushes and a flower by Robert Bonfils. Bonfils is best-known for his iconic poster for the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts (Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes). That exhibition was designed by the French government to highlight the new "style moderne" which soon became known as "art deco" (after the French name for the exhibition). Note that the first Salon d'Automne was created under the initiative of several artists, and was perceived as a reaction against the conservative policies of the official Paris Salon. This massive exhibition almost immediately became the showpiece of developments and innovations in 20th-century painting, drawing, sculpture, engraving, architecture and decorative arts. During the Salon's early years, established artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir threw their support behind the new exhibition and even Auguste Rodin displayed several works. Since its inception, works by artists such as Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin, Georges Rouault, Andre Derain, Albert Marquet, Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes and Marcel Duchamp have been shown.
