A Vintage Autographed Hardcover Book (measures 6" x 8" [15 x 20 cm]; 362 pages) (Learn More) Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life, the 1925 Merian C. Cooper & Ernest B.Schoedsack silent Iran cattle herd documentary ("Featuring fifty thousand people"; "Half a million cattle") featuring Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack, Marguerite Harrison, Haidar Khan, and Lufta. Note that this is a legendary documentary, not so much for what it shows (although it apparently was an excellent documentary!), but because it was created by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B.Schoedsack. Schoedsack had created some documentaries in the late 1910s, but his career really took off when he joined with Cooper for this movie. The acclaim this movie received led them to film another documentary, Chang, two years later. The success of that documentary led to Cooper becoming a producer at RKO, and after several very successful movies that he produced and Schoedsack directed, including The Four Feathers and The Most Dangerous Game, the pair teamed up for one of the most successful movies of all time, King Kong, in 1933. It is unlikely that much movie paper was created for this, their first documentary, and any movie paper from it is incredibly scarce! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this hardcover book, which is the 5th printing from June 1926! Also note that this book has been personally autographed (signed) by Merian C. Cooper (he obviously was giving it to a very close friend, because he signed it "To: 'Ig' Noble, one of the best of friends, from 'Coop' Merian C. Cooper")! Our consignor purchased it 25 years ago from a major bookstore, and they did not provide a certificate of authenticity, but we feel certain the signature is authentic. Note that this is the G.P. Putnam's Sons photoplay edition in its original dust jacket. Here are some more details about these books: this company (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 30 movie edition books (and a few closely related items) that were consigned to us from a man who has collected such books for over half a century! Included are some of the most rare and desirable of these books, and all have the original dust jackets (many times such books lost their dust jackets over the years and they are far more rare with the dust jacket). This is a very rare opportunity to obtain one or more of these books, most of which we have either never auctioned before or only auctioned once before! Note: We have 19 images of this book, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 19 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 9. Condition: good to very good. There is some small paper loss, creases, and tears in the top and bottom of the dust jacket. There are some small stains scattered in the entire dust jacket, but fortunately, many of them blend in with the image on the cover (although the ones on the back cover don't). The book itself is in pretty nice condition (see our many images). Learn More about condition grades
