An Original Vintage Linenbacked French World War I Poster (measures 30 3/4" x 44 1/4" [78 x 112 cm]) (Learn More) La Journee Serbe (literally translates to "Serbian Day"), the 1916 French World War I (WWI) Serbian Relief Fund charity poster promoting the June 25th event which commemorated the Anniversary of the 1915 Battle of Kosovo, and featuring Dominique Charles Fouqueray artwork of the Great Retreat (showing the remnants of the Serbian army, King Peter and many refugees fleeing from their homeland). Note that over 200,000 thousand Serbs died of cold and hunger during the Great Retreat in the winter of 1915-1916, and Serbian Day was organized in Paris for the benefit of the Serbian Relief Fund. Also note that this poster has been slightly trimmed on the left, right, and top sides (approximately 1/2" each) and it now measures 30 3/4" x 44 1/4" [78 x 112 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Based on past examples of this poster we have seen, three of the blank borders were slightly trimmed (see above). The poster had some tiny paper loss in its single horizontal fold and there were some creases and smudges scattered in the bottom across the title area. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
