An Original Vintage Japanese Campaign Book (measures 8 1/4" x 11 3/4" [21 x 30 cm]; 176 pages) (Learn More) Japan Motion Picture Almanac 1957, the 1957 Japanese export campaign book. It is entirely in English, even though it was printed in Japan, because it was sent to exhibitors in the U.S. and other English-speaking countries, trying to get them to book these Japanese movies. The book does not promote individual movies, but rather it is an encyclopedia of information about Japanese studios, directors, and actors, and there are images of many of the leading people in each of those areas (including Kurosawa and Mifune), and lists of "Who's Who" in the Japanese motion picture industry, lists of the theaters, lists of the Japanese pictures released in 1955 and 1956, and much more. Note that the cover of this book feature the famous Hokusai artwork titled "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". This book is surely quite rare! Artist: Hokusai Important Added Info: Note that this book has biographies of many leading Japanese actors (usually 8 to a page), and on the page with the biography for Yoshiko Yamaguchi, someone got that actress to sign the photo, but she signed it with the name she is much better known by in the U.S., "Shirley Yamaguchi" (see our image). We don't know how this autograph was obtained, but we can't imagine it is not authentic, and it is a cool addition to this book! Also note that we have only once before auctioned this Japanese campaign book, and that example sold for $380! Condition: good to very good. The book is in pretty nice condition, but it has one odd small defect. On the pages where there are small images of leading male and female stars, someone wrote tiny numbers in a corner of each image, numbering the stars. They then marked some of those numbers next to the text biographies on nearby pages. We don't know why they would have done that, but it really doesn't detract from the book (but bear it in mind before bidding on the book). Learn More about condition grades
