An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded MGM Personality Poster (measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Greta Garbo was a legendary romantic Swedish actress from the 1924 to 1941 (she retired at the age of 35, still extremely popular, and lived in seclusion for many decades afterwards, living by her trademark expression, "I want to be alone"). Almost all other major leading ladies of the mid 1920s had their careers diminished or ruined by the coming of sound, but not Garbo, all the more remarkable because she was not native English-speaking and she had a strong accent. She first rose to prominence in a movie in her native Sweden, and then attracted the interest of Hollywood, but she would only sign a contract if they would sign her director as well, and MGM agreed! Some of her movies include: Ninotchka (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Queen Christina, Grand Hotel, Anna Christie (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Romance (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and Camille (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film). Garbo passed away in 1990 at the age of 84. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that MGM created three different sets of personality posters in the 1930s to promote their stars (in the past, I had thought that there were only two different sets, because the ones from the first set are incredibly rare). The earliest set was made in 1931, and it featured MGM's top stars of that time, with each getting a beautiful 22" x 28" full-color head & shoulders portrait (these were the same size as half-sheets, but oriented vertically, and they have no blank borders). Approximately 2 years later, in 1933, MGM created a second set, reflecting the change in their top stars, so some stars remained in the set, but with new images of them, and some stars were dropped and others added in their place. Approximately 2 more years later, in 1935, MGM created yet another set. All three sets can be easily distinguished from each other by the way the stars' names are presented in the bottom. These posters are extremely rare as few theaters ordered them, and fewer still saved them, and in addition, they could be easily torn, and if they were not stored carefully, they would become fragile, and it is likely many were damaged and discarded for that reason! Note that these posters were printed on a high quality paper stock, but it is one that does not always age very well, and can become fragile (usually resulting in chips around the edges of the poster). Because of their fragile nature and their age, we always send these posters in large flat packages, and never roll them into tubes (unless the buyer insists)! PLEASE DO NOT BID ON THIS POSTER, UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY THE COST OF SHIPPING IT IN A LARGE FLAT PACKAGE! Condition: very good. The poster has a very light 8" horizontal crease running from the left edge of the poster (10" from the bottom) into Garbo's cheek (it is barely noticeable and not at all distracting). There are some faint creases in the bottom left and top right corners and very minor border wear. There are a few faint creases scattered in the poster.
