eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 1a1008 SPHINX 7 LCs 1933 Lionel Atwill in a dual role, early Monogram murder mystery, ultra rare! Date Sold 10/31/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 7 Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Cards (LCs; measure 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Sphinx, the 1933 Phil Rosen mistaken identity romantic love triangle murder mystery crime thriller (about a rich deaf mute man who is always around when people are found murdered, and some people claim to have heard him talking, but the police test his hearing by firing guns and making loud sounds near him, and he always passes; at the end of the movie it is revealed that he CAN talk and hear, but that he has a deaf mute twin brother, who takes his place when it is necessary!) starring Lionel Atwill (as twin brothers), Sheila Terry, Theodore Newton ("Courtesy of Warner Bros."), Paul Hurst, Lucien Prival, and Robert Ellis. Note that the title of this movie refers to the old expression about someone being "as unmoving as a Sphinx", which is how the deaf mute man in the movie reacts to loud sounds. But the designer of the lobby cards either didn't know this or didn't care, and they put artwork of the actual Sphinx and the pyramids in the border of the lobby cards! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper items from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a single lobby card (we auctioned the same card twice) and a single still from this movie (and NO other movie paper of any kind) until we received this group of 7 lobby cards! We are also currently auctioning a one-sheet, which we have never before auctioned, in a separate auction! Condition: good. The title card has a yellowed piece of tape in the center of the left and right borders, with light scuffing and smudges scattered throughout the card (mostly only noticeable in the dark colored areas), and tiny paper loss in the left of the bottom blank border. The card with the men fighting has two tears in the left blank border, tiny paper loss in each right blank corner, and two tiny black dots in the face of the man at center. The card with the woman covering her face has a small tear in both the upper left and upper right blank borders, numbers written in pencil in the bottom right corner, tiny paper loss in the bottom left blank corner, and a light diagonal scuff line in the upper right of the image, extending from the woman's eyebrow into the dark background to the right. The super close up card with Atwill and the blonde woman has a small tear in the middle of the left border, creases in the bottom left blank corner that were repaired with tape from the back, and some tiny scuff marks running down the center of the image. The card with the couple reading the newspaper has paper loss in the bottom right blank corner but is otherwise in nice condition. The card with the man handcuffed on the ground has yellowed tape on the back of the center of the left and right borders (the one on the left border was slightly folded over to the front), a small tear in the top blank border, and a few faint smudges and scuffs scattered around the edges. The card with the man kissing the woman's cheek has staining scattered in the bottom of the image and a tear at middle left (it is in "fair" condition). Obviously, one would prefer to find these cards in better condition, but they are beyond rare, and it might take a lifetime just to find seven more cards in the same condition!
