An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) The Gold Rush, the classic 1925 Charles Chaplin silent Alaska Yukon rags-to-riches romantic slapstick comedy ("A Dramatic Comedy"; "Written and Directed [and scored] by Charlie Chaplin"; Chaplin is a prospector who goes to Alaska by himself in search of gold, and he falls in love with a dance hall girl who doesn't even notice him, and he gets lost and has many adventures) starring Charlie Chaplin (Charles Chaplin), Mack Swain, Tom Murray, Georgia Hale, and Henry Bergman. Note that this movie not only contains the classic sequence of the snowbound Chaplin and Mack Swain sharing a shoe and eating it because they are starving, but it also contains the equally classic scene of Chaplin putting two dinner rolls on forks and making them "dance"! Also note that the movie was filmed "on location", but only for a small part of the movie did they go to the High Sierras. For the close scenes, Chaplin had artificial mountains created out of chicken wire and burlap covering 200 tons of plaster, 285 tons of salt, and 100 barrels of flour, and the artificial ice and snow was made of the same materials. 4 carloads of "cornfetti" were used for the blizzard scenes. They also transported much of the same material to the Sierra mountains to enhance the scenes shot there. The entire production took over a year, from first filming to final cut! This is surely Charlie Chaplin's greatest movie, and it is hard to argue with anyone describing it as the single greatest silent movie ever made, and both the movie and Chaplin are known the world over, even to people who have never seen this movie (but they certainly should see it!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that original 1925 lobby cards from "The Gold Rush" are incredibly rare! It is often years between the times they are offered for sale. This auction contains two different cards (offered as separate items). The item offered here is the card with the great close up image of Chaplin with Mack Swain. Note that each of the two cards offered here have entirely different border artwork of Chaplin! Condition: very good. six pinholes across the top blank border and three across the bottom blank border; three 1/2" scuff marks in the right of Swain's hood and a 1" scratch mark in the background area to the right of Swain; a few faint scuff marks at the top center of the image area; when the card is tilted to the light, one can see a scuff mark that runs from the middle of the bottom of the image, up around Swain's hood, and stops at the right of his hood. BUT IT IS TRULY INVISIBLE WHEN THE CARD IS LOOKED AT STRAIGHT ON, AND IT IS EVEN HARD TO SEE WHEN THE CARD IS TILTED TO THE LIGHT (you have to look at it exactly right to see it). Other than the above defects (which really have little effect on the appreciation of the card and have no effect on either Chaplin image or the title area, the card is in nice condition!
