An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 19 1/2" x 29" [50 x 74 cm]) (Learn More) Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, the 1901 Marc Klaw & A.L. Erlanger Broadway stage play revival (of the famous play by William Shakespeare) starring Nat C. Goodwin (billed as "N.C. Goodwyn as Shylock", the Jewish moneylender who demands a "pound of flesh" when his loan is not repaid), Maxine Elliot ("as Portia"), Annie Irish, Effie Ellsler, J.E. Dodson, Macklyn Arbuckle (billed as "Maclyn Arbuckle"), and Vincent Serrano. Note that Macklyn Arbuckle, who played Antonio, was a cousin of Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle. He was mainly a stage actor who only appeared in 18 movies. He was very successful on the stage (he had started in the 1890s), and in one of his greatest stage successes, "The Roundup", the phrase was coined "Nobody loves a fat man", and when a film was made of the play, Fatty Arbuckle played the lead, and that tagline was used on the one-sheet! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of 78 very rare posters (including 53 WWI and WWII posters and 18 stage play posters) that mostly date from 1888 to 1945. These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these 78 posters (which even includes a remarkable 1873 P.T. Barnum poster from his "Traveling World's Fair")! Note that in June of 2016, we auctioned around 100 posters that were from this same archive. The 78 posters we are currently auctioning represent most of the remaining posters from this remarkable find (we certainly wish there were lots more, but unfortunately there are not, so this is likely your last opportunity to acquire these great rarities!). Condition: good. There are areas of paper loss in the left border that slightly extend into the center of the border art (and since it is a mirror image of the border art on the right side, it could be easily recreated). There are a couple of small tears in the right border. Otherwise, the poster is in nice condition, especially considering its age! Learn More about condition grades
