eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 7y0188 ARIZONA WC 1931 great romantic art of soldier John Wayne & Laura La Plante, incredibly rare! Date Sold 3/16/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Movie Window Card (WC; measures 12" x 16" [30 x 41 cm]) (Learn More) Arizona, the 1931 George B. Seitz romantic military love triangle melodrama ("Does Love Bring Dishonor?"; "From the play by Augustus Thomas"; Lieutenant and ladies' man John Wayne is more interested in La Plante's sister than in her, and La Plante gets revenge by romancing Wayne's superior officer, and manipulating him into asking for Wayne's resignation!) starring Laura La Plante, John Wayne, June Clyde, Forrest Stanley, Adrian Morris ("and an all star cast"). Note that John Wayne had been an unknown bit actor in the 1920s, but in 1930, he was given a gigantic break and given the lead in Fox's major western, "The Big Trail". Sadly, that break did not translate into huge success for Wayne, and he had a few more starring roles in dramatic parts, but then became the lead in B-westerns through much of the 1930s. It was only after Gary Cooper turned down the lead in "Stagecoach" in 1939, and the role was offered the John Wayne, that he became a truly major star! "Arizona" was the third movie Wayne made after "The Big Trail", and he is the male lead, but billed under Laura La Plante! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this window card! Not only that, but it is the only poster from the movie we have ever auctioned (we had all the lobby cards in our special John Wayne auction). Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 12" x 16" [30 x 41 cm] (see below). Condition: fair. The card was found in the back of a frame where it had been used as a backing board for a picture (many framers in the 1920s and 1930s would use window cards for this purpose, and they would trim them to the size of the frame, not caring that they were cutting into the image!). In this case, the trimming, which was to 12" x 16", affects the right and top of the card, and you can see what is missing by looking at our image. Since most of the title, image, and credits remain, I would think a restorer could replace the missing area, even if they were unable to locate an image of the original card, since it is just the end of the title and credits and the top of La Plante's hair, but please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its major defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored (or would display it as is).
