Date Sold 4/14/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5" x 7 1/2" [13 x 19 cm]; 230 pages) (Learn More) Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World!, the classic 1951 Christian Nyby science fiction (sci-fi) monster horror thriller ("The Thing from another world!"; "How did it get here?"; "Natural or Supernatural?"; "Howard Hawks' Astounding Movie"; "Look out... it's The Thing from another world!"; produced by Howard Hawks; based on the story by John W. Campbell, best known for being the editor of Astounding Science Fiction!) starring Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Dewey Martin, Paul Frees, John Dierkes, Eduard Franz, James Arness (in the title role as The Thing From Another World!), William Self, and Billy Curtis (as the miniature "Thing" in the final sequence when the monster appears to shrink). Note that this movie had a very unusual poster campaign, where the letters of the title were made to look like body parts ("blood and guts"!), with wires coming off of the letters. Almost all the posters had this basic design. The pressbook calls all of them "teaser" posters and says "This display material was designed for an advance teaser campaign, as well as for general use". So obviously, they intentionally wanted to have the posters not reveal much about the movie, as a way to get people interested and get them into the theater. The book is based on the story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, originally published in a pulp magazine in 1934. Included with the book is a Spanish herald from the 1951 movie The Thing From Another World, which was based on this novel. Note that it, together with three of the other similar movie edition books we are auctioning, comes in a really cool special made slipcase that is like a "clam shell", in that you put the book in it and it closes securely around it. It appears these are generic cases, but each of them has a cool printed paper on the spine with the title and author of the specific book! A book collector tells us that these custom cases cost around $125 to $250 each (depending on how elaborate they are), but the winner of this auction gets this custom case as a free bonus! Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 30 movie edition books (and a few closely related items) that were consigned to us from a man who has collected such books for over half a century! Included are some of the most rare and desirable of these books, and all have the original dust jackets (many times such books lost their dust jackets over the years and they are far more rare with the dust jacket). This is a very rare opportunity to obtain one or more of these books, most of which we have either never auctioned before or only auctioned once before! Note: We have 13 images of this book, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 13 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 3. Condition: very good. There is slight scuffing in the top left of the cover of the dust jacket. The book itself is in pretty nice condition (see our many images). Learn More about condition grades
