An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Anna May Wong was a Chinese-American actress from the 1910s to the 1960s. Some of her movies include: Shanghai Express, Thief of Bagdad, Impact, Across to Singapore, and Piccadilly. Unfortunately, due to the prejudices of the time, the studios cast white actresses over her, even in Asian roles, having the white actresses perform in "yellowface", which meant that Miss Wong would almost always play a friend or enemy of the white actress in the lead Asian role! She passed away in 1961 at the age of 56.
Important Added Info: Note that this photo is printed on a "flat" paper stock, not glossy paper stock, as was standard in stills in the 1920s and 1930s. That makes it much more likely that it is a test photo. Such photos were printed prior to stills being created, so that the photographer and the studio could pick out the ones they wanted from the test photos, and then those chosen would be reproduced in large quantities on glossy paper. Often, test photos have markings on them to indicate that they were used or not used (sometimes an "X" or a check mark). This photo does not have any such markings. It also has "ANNA MAY WONG PARAMOUNT PICTURES" stamped on the back, which is also unusual for a test photo. So it might not be a test photo, but it is definitely on a flat paper stock. Also, the image of Anna May Wong is definitely her from "Daughter of the Dragon". We have seen another of her in the same outfit that was stamped by photographer Eugene Robert Richee on the back, and it is quite likely Richee took this image as well.
