The company began as Standard Oil of New Jersey but eventually became known as Esso ("Eastern States Standard Oil"). In the past, the company has also branched into other areas, including tires & batteries (under the name Atlas), kerosene, service stations and more. In modern times, Esso is a trading name for ExxonMobil and its related companies. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this advertising poster! It is for Essolene Motor Fuel made by the Esso company, and they were selling it to consumers as being better than other gasoline, because it made your car more powerful, and the poster has a great image of a man playing a tuba, implying that the power your car would get would be similar to the powerful sound from a tuba, and the poster also uses the slogan "Tune Up - For Power", which Esso first copyrighted in 1937! Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had some horizontal creases scattered throughout, with paper loss in the middle of the "R" of "POWER" at top right, and some faint stains to the right of it. It had some pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
