2 Original Vintage (measure 6" x 8" [15 x 20 cm] and 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" [17 x 22 cm]) News Photos (Learn More)

Orville and Wilbur Wright (the Wright Brothers) were aviators and inventors in the early 1900s. They were credited with building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered, and sustained heavier-than-air manned flight on December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. They did not "invent" the airplane, but they made important modifications to what had been previously created. They sold their patents to the Curtiss-Wright company. Wilbur passed away in 1912, and Orville lived until 1948.
Important Added Info: Note that the term "museum quality" is often used for collectibles, but these two news photos sure fit the bill completely! They are both from 1927 or earlier (one has a date stamp of "JUN 19 1927" on the back, but obviously they could be from an even earlier date, all the way back to 1903!). Both were used and reused by newspapers, and both have clippings and snipes on the back from when they were reused at later dates (by the Photofest news agency, which put their sticker on the back of each). One has a wonderful close standing portrait of probably as famous a pair of brothers as there ever has been, and the other shows the actual first flight at Kitty Hawk, with Orville at the controls of the plane and Wilbur running alongside the plane! These are certainly from 1927 or earlier, and if anyone can help us better date them, please e-mail us and we will post it here. We certainly hope that whoever wins this auction will potentially publicly display these historic photos!

Condition: good. As noted above, both photos have snipes and stickers glued and taped to the back and they have other defects as well. But they certainly can be displayed exactly as they are! Please look closely at the super-sized images of both photos before bidding on these most historic news photos.
