An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 8 3/4" x 14 3/4" [22 x 37 cm]; 18 pages) (Learn More) John Cassavetes' Shadows, the classic 1959 John Cassavetes New York City counter-culture interracial romantic love triangle family relationship melodrama starring Lelia Goldoni, Ben Carruthers, Hugh Hurd, Anthony Ray, Dennis Sallas, Tom Allen, Rupert Crosse, Greta Thyssen. Note that John Cassavetes first filmed this in 1956 and 1957 (he had appeared on Jean Shepherd's radio show, and raised the seed money for the movie from Shepherd's "Night People"!). He completed it in 1957, but was unhappy with it, and he shelved it, and in 1959, he re-shot much of it, and it was released in New York (and was released in other countries two years later in 1961). The success of this movie got Cassavetes a Hollywood contract to direct "Too Late Blues" in 1961 and "A Child is Waiting" in 1963. Decades later, a copy of the 1957 version of "Shadows" was discovered, and there has been a restoration of the movie using various surviving prints. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is a very unusual pressbook! It is a folder with 18 single sided pages stapled to the inside of it, and there are NO poster pages. There is a synopsis of the movie, advance newspaper and magazine reviews of the movie, and four slick pages of "ad mats" and newspaper ads, and each page says at the bottom "All advertising accessories and trailer available from Donald L. Velde Enterprises". One of the four pages has the single line, "2 color 1 sheet is available", but no image of it, or of any other sizes. We do not believe any other pressbook was created for the first release of this movie, and we have only auctioned this unusual pressbook once before (it sold for $125!). Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. There are some creases, scuffs, and slight discoloration scattered in parts of the covers.
