An Original Vintage Unfolded German Stage Play Poster (measures 23 1/4" x 33 1/4" [59 x 84 cm]) (Learn More)

Ruhe ist der Erste Burgerfluch (literally translates to "Silence is the First Curse of the Citizen"; a common anarchist/punk quote from the 1970s), the 1986 German stage play poster featuring the upcoming plays to be held at the Stadtische Buhnen in Osnabruck, Germany in 1986 and 1987. Note that this poster features a weird image of a man with colored hair popping up out of tiles by Holger Matthies. Holger Matthies is a German graphic artist from the 1970s to the present. Over the course of more than four decades, he has designed more than 1000 posters, making him one of the world's most prolific poster artists. He is best known for his designs for theater and opera productions, exhibitions, concerts, and political satire shows. His portfolio is further swelled by social and political posters, cover designs for magazines and books, as well as numerous LP and CD covers. He has said that, "Posters should be like pocket knives - spring open, dissect and get under the skin." Title is a satirical distortion of the original saying: Silence is the first duty (Pflicht) of the citizen. The historical origin of this saying is as follows: When the first news of the unfortunate battle of Jena (1806) came to Berlin, the Minister Count Schulenburg had red slips written on the street corners of the city, on which read: "The king has lost a bataille , Now rest is the first civic duty; I ask for it. Schulenburg."
Artist: Holger Matthies

Condition: very good to fine. The poster is in nice condition!
