An Original Vintage 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Television Still (Learn More) Dick Shawn (born Richard Schleufand) was a stand-up comedian and actor from the 1950s to the 1980s. He almost never entered show business at all, because he was a top baseball player in high school, and right after he graduated, he was signed by the Chicago White Sox to a contract. But he got drafted and while in the military, he discovered USO shows, and became a performer, and when he got out, he became a stand-up comedian! He is likely best remembered for his role as L.S.D. (Lorenzo St. Dubois, who becomes the lead "Hitler") in The Producers and for his co-starring role in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He passed away in 1987 at the age of 63. Important Added Info: Note that this still is from the first showing of the 10/23/54 episode of "Max Liebman Spectaculars", called "The Follies of Suzy". We know that for certain because it has the date printed on the snipe on the back. It is very hard to find stills from 1950s or 1960s TV episodes that are absolutely from the first release, and are surely not from a 1960s or 1970s re-broadcast. Note that Dick Shawn's very first TV appearances, before any movies, were in three episodes of this show. This was the second of the three episodes (about a playwright who is writing about a ballerina, and he dreams about her, and she gives him advice about how to write the play; interestingly, one of the writers on this TV episode was Neil Simon, and his name was misspelled as "Neal", which may account for why he is not credited for this in the IMDb), and his image is surely the youngest of him we have ever seen!
