An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More) Meres francaises (released in the U.S. as "Mothers of France"), the 1917 Rene Hervil & Louis Mercanton French silent World War I (WWI) romantic family relationship melodrama ("Written by Jean Richepin Member of the French Academy") starring Sarah Bernhardt (one of just seven movies made by the famous French stage actress!), Berthe Jalabert, Gabriel Signoret, Jean Signoret, and Georges Melchior. Note that Sarah Bernhardt was one of the most legendary stage actresses ever. She was born in 1844 in Paris, France, the daughter of poor Jewish parents. She acted while she was a student in her teens, but became the mistress of a Belgian prince, and had a child by him. The prince's family forced him to break up with her, and she became a courtesan, and she began acting again in 1866, and by the 1870s was France's leading actress, and she also toured all over Europe and in New York, earning her the nickname "The Divine Sarah". She made her first movie in 1900, and only appeared in a total of seven movies (she injured a leg in 1905, and it had to be amputated, and she performed with a wooden leg!). She continued to appear on the stage, and she passed away in 1923 at the age of 78! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: KD Important Added Info: Note that this poster is a "teaser" three-sheet, created in advance of the movie opening in America. It only gives the star's name and the title of the movie. It has a great Art-Nouveau illustration of Sarah Bernhardt within an elaborate frame. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was fragile and it had tears and areas of paper loss around the edges, extending into the borders of the frame in the top right corner and in the middle right of the main image, and slightly in the center of the top border. There was a 7" tear in the left of the top border, extending into the edge of Bernhardt's hair. There was small paper loss at the top of her forehead, and a tear in her cheek. There were some small tears and tiny areas of paper loss on the foldlines. There were brown stains scattered in the bottom writing area, and some in the top right, with some in the lower part of Bernhardt's figure. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. A really talented restorer performed extremely careful expert restoration to the above areas, removing some of the staining through chemical means. The poster displays fantastically from any reasonable viewing distance, and even from close up it does not have a "restored" look. This is surely one of the only surviving movie posters from Sarah Bernhardt's films, and we certainly hope the new owner of it will display it prominently. Learn More about condition grades
