Date Sold 1/19/2014Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 7 Original Vintage Theatrical Color 11" x 14 1/4" [28 x 36 cm] Movie Stills (Learn More) West Side Story, the classic 1961 Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins (winners of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) New York City romantic dance musical ("The screen achieves one of the great entertainments in the history of motion pictures"; "'Best Picture' Winner of 10 Academy Awards 1961"; "Based upon the stage play produced by Robert E. Griffith and Harold S. Prince" winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; with a sentimental script by Ernest Lehman, which borrows heavily from "Romeo & Juliet"; based on a book by Arthur Laurents) starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), and George Chakiris (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film). The wonderful music was by Leonard Bernstein and the equally wonderful lyrics were by Stephen Sondheim. Note that Natalie Wood's singing was dubbed by Marni Nixon (who had also dubbed The King and I and The Sound of Music), and Richard Beymer's singing was dubbed as well. Recordings exist of some of Natalie Wood's singing, and she absolutely would have been fine, but Hollywood demands perfection! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that the stills come with a folder that has some of the classic Joseph Caroff art printed on it, and it also has a 5" x 5" paper snipe glued on it which has the title and the Caroff art (see our image). We don't know if this folder is from the first roadshow release or if it is something from a later time, because we have never seen it before. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that there are six different stills and one duplicate still in this lot (see our image). Please do not bid on this lot thinking you will receive seven different stills, because there are six stills and a duplicate. Also note that these stills measure 11" x 14 1/4" [28 x 36 cm]. Note that when this classic movie first opened, it had a "roadshow" release (it only opened in select big cities). They did not use regular lobby cards until the movie's regular release, but instead created this really cool set of 12 color stills (often referred to as "roadshow lobby cards"). They are printed on a high quality coated paper stock. Condition: good to very good. The roadshow stills have some creases and scuffs. The folder has staining as seen in our image.
