A 1980 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Wicker Man, the classic 1974 Robin Hardy English cult fantasy pagan religion melodrama ("Flesh to touch... Flesh to burn! Don't keep the Wicker Man waiting!"; "The residents of Summerisle invited Sergeant Howie to their traditional May Day festival. He didn't expect to meet... The Wicker Man"; "A totally corrupt shocker from the author of 'Sleuth' and 'Frenzy'!"; "Anthony Shaffer's incredible occult thriller"; "An island lost to unspeakable terrors of pagan rituals!"; about a police investigation involving a neo-pagan society on a remote Scottish isle, and their possible use of human sacrifice) starring Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Christopher Lee ("as Lord Summerisle"). Note that this English film has a confusing history! Studio executives did not know how to market the film, and it was heavily-edited and released in England as part of a double-bill in 1974 (after a test screening in December of 1973). After Roger Corman declined to purchase the U.S. release rights, Warner Brothers did so and released the film to drive-in theaters in May and then shelved it in August. In 1977, Abraxas bought the U.S. rights, restored some of the edited footage and showed the film to theater owners (and perhaps had a single theatrical showing in New Orleans). We have never seen posters for this and likely none were created. In 1978, Summerisle Films sub-leased the movie from Abraxas and premiered it at the Telluride Film Festival before giving it a limited release in late 1978 and 1979. Summerisle Films went out of business in 1979 and Dynamite Entertainment and Abraxas gave the film another re-release in 1980 (with a one-sheet very similar to the Summerisle Films one-sheet). Important Added Info: Note that the poster we are offering in this auction is often mistakenly sold as the rare 1978 re-release poster, but it is actually from 1980 re-release. This image does appear on an 1978 one-sheet, but that poster is extremely scarce and contains a different tagline at top. Please only bid on this poster if you want the 1980 re-release poster! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had fine surface paper loss on parts of some foldlines (typical of high-gloss posters of this period). It also had a few smudges and scuffs along parts of the folds and in the solid black areas, with some creases in the bottom. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
