A Linenbacked French Liquor Advertising Poster (measures 45 1/2" x 62" [116 x 157 cm]) (Learn More)

Maurin Quina is a French aperitif created in 1884 by Auguste Maurin in Le Puy, France. In 1906, Italian artist Leonetto Cappiello created the famous artwork of a green devil as the mascot/label for the drink, and he painted wonderful art of the green devil de-corking a bottle while floating in air against a dark background. Soon after that art was used on several different 1906 French posters (the same basic image, but on different sizes of posters), the alcoholic beverage it advertised went out of production. However, this wonderful art was reproduced in many ways over the years, and it is likely Cappiello's most famous poster ever (he created over 2,000 different posters during his life).
Artist: Leonetto Cappiello
Important Added Info: Note that this is an original 1906 poster. There are later reproductions of it, but this is the original, and it measures 45 1/2" x 62".

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. There are many scuffs scattered in the solid black areas. There is a 1 1/2" vertical tear in the devil's foot, and some creases in the lower part of his body. There were uneven creases in the black area below the bottle and a 5" diagonal crease coming off the bottom of the devil's calf. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. The poster can be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or certainly, one could choose to have it re-backed, if the new owner wished to have the above defects corrected. Either way, it will look wonderful on the new owner's wall!
