An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed Deluxe 10 1/4" x 13 3/4" [26 x 35 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Josef von Sternberg (born Jonas Sternberg) was an Austrian writer and director from the 1920s to the 1950s. His family moved to New York City when he was young. He idolized Erich von Stroheim (and added a "von" to his name, and Europeanized the spelling of his first name, in tribute to his idol), and made many wonderful movies, including several with Marlene Dietrich, who he pretty much "discovered", and was integral in making her into a superstar. Some of his films include: Blue Angel, Shanghai Express (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), Morocco (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), and The Scarlet Empress. He passed away in 1969 at the age of 75.
Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Josef von Sternberg! Our consignor purchased this Potter Auctions in Chicago. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we think it extremely likely the signature is authentic. The inscription on the photo reads "Robert Klein-Lork in Freundschaft ["friendship" in German] - Josef von Sternberg, Hollywood". Klein-Lork was a German actor who appeared in a minor role in von Sternberg's "The Blue Angel". He was a cabaret performer who left Germany in 1933 and later moved to the U.S. and passed away in 1963 in New York, and this photo likely was a treasured possession of his that he kept through his life. Also note that this still measures 10 1/4" x 13 3/4" [26 x 35 cm], but it has not been trimmed. Finally, note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock and it has an embossed photographer's stamp in one of the bottom corners.

As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased (although we prefer they do any "authenticating" while the auction is "live" and before they place a bid) and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.

Condition: good. The photo had many creases, scuffs, and some tears around the edges, with a horizontal crease running through the top of von Sternberg's hair, and a small crease on the side of his nose, but otherwise, his image was not much affected, and the inscription and signature were also only slightly affected. There were diagonal cuts in the bottom blank corners. Someone had the photo backed on paper, but pretty much left the photo as it is (see our images).
