McMillan Johnson) was a Hollywood art director from the 1930s to the 1990s. He was graduated from USC with a degree in architecture before attending Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He was working for well-known architect Kem Weber when he was hired by David O. Selznick in 1938. He worked as a sketch artist for designs on Gone with the Wind and was heavily involved with the creation of the special effects for The Wizard of Oz. He worked on most of Selznick's major productions, which included: Duel in the Sun, The Paradine Case and Portrait of Jennie (for which he won an Oscar for the visual effects). He also worked on Stormy Weather in 1943, and was a frequent collaborator with Alfred Hitchcock, and To Catch a Thief earned him another Academy Award nomination. He continued to earn Oscar nominations for The Facts of Life, Mutiny on the Bounty, The Greatest Story Ever Told and Ice Station Zebra. He retired in 1971 and passed away in 1990 at the age of 77. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that four of these five original watercolor paintings have been personally autographed (signed) by the artist, Joseph McMillan Johnson (he signed as "Mac Johnson")! We have never before auctioned any original art from this most respected artist who did much work in Hollywood in its golden years (see above). The paintings (which are "concept art" for movies about to be filmed) are not identified as to what movies they were created for, but we think there is a good chance that at least one was created for "Stormy Weather", and one may have been created for "Since You Went Away". If anyone can identify exactly which movies any of these were created for, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: very good. Each of the paintings was done on illustration board. Each has been matted. The paintings have some very minor scuffs or smudges (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
