HYDE signed linen trade ad 1931 by BOTH Rouben Mamoulian AND Karl Struss! Date Sold 11/4/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Linenbacked Original Vintage Autographed Movie Trade Ad (measures 12 1/4" x 18" [31 x 46 cm]) (Learn More) Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the 1931 Rouben Mamoulian double-personality fantasy monster horror thriller ("Based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson") starring Fredric March (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in both title roles; he tied with Wallace Beery who won for The Champ), Miriam Hopkins, Rose Hobart, Holmes Herbert, Edgar Norton, and Halliwell Hobbes. Note that this movie premiered in New York City on New Year's Eve 1931, and then went into general release in the U.S. in 1932. So except for that one night, it is a 1932 movie, but because it is always identified as being from 1931, we also identify it that way! That also helps explain why there is movie paper dated 1933. It was a giant hit, and the movie was surely still in its first release into 1933, and more paper was printed as it was needed. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this trade ad has been personally autographed (signed) by BOTH director Rouben Mamoulian AND cinematographer Karl Struss (and this movie had wonderful cinematography, especially in the transformation scenes and the use of montage images)! Our consignor does not have a "certificate of authenticity", but he has compared the signatures to known examples, and both he and we think it is incredibly likely that both signatures are authentic. Also note that this two-page trade ad appeared in an exhibitor magazine in 1931. The ad had printing on the reverse, and the person who backed it wisely used black rice paper behind it rather than white rice paper, because that makes the "bleed-through" from the writing on the back far less than it would be had they used white paper (see our image). Note that because of the size of this trade ad, it could be sent rolled in a tube, or it could be sent in a large flat package (which would make sense to do if the winning bidder has other large flat items to combine it with). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The trade ad had some light smudges down the center. Overall, the trade ad was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The trade ad was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
