An Autographed Photo (measures 5" x 7" [13 x 18 cm]) (Learn More) Jimmy Durante was a legendary actor/comedian from the 1920s to the 1960s. He was memorable for his very large nose, and he was nicknamed "Schnozzola". He started performing in 1916, and in the early 1920s he formed a trio with two black African Americans, Eddie Jackson and Lou Clayton, which was certainly unusual for that time! The trio, known as "Three Sawdust Bums", became a major success, including in vaudeville and on Broadway. The trio broke up in 1931, and Durante was later in movies, TV, and virtually every other form of entertainment (and Eddie Jackson remained his sidekick throughout his career)! Some of his movies include: The Man Who Came to Dinner, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, The Christmas Party, and Two Sisters from Boston. He passed away in 1980 at the age of 86. Important Added Info: Note that this photo has been personally autographed (signed) by Jimmy Durante. He added "Umbriago means a happy go lucky fellow"; this was in reference to Durante's famous song from 1946 of that name, which was about a person who stayed happy no matter what his circumstances, and it certainly also described Durante. Our consignor is a longtime collector who received this autograph from a close personal friend. The friend received the autograph directly from the family of Isaac Abzug, who received the autograph at a Durante appearance. Mr. Abzug (who was the brother of Congresswoman Bella Abzug) passed away in his late twenties in 1950. Our consignor does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to be authentic. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased (although we prefer they do any "authenticating" while the auction is "live" and before they place a bid) and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.
