eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 3k413 MERRIE MELODIES linen 1sh R44 great super early cartoon art of Bugs Bunny & Elmer Fudd! Date Sold 9/4/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A 1944 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Merrie Melodies, the 1941 stock poster for theaters showing Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies Looney Tunes animated cartoon shorts ("A new Merrie Melodies in Technicolor"; "A Warner Bros. short subject") and featuring great early art of Bugs Bunny on a swing painting a sign, alongside several other characters including Elmer Fudd, Sniffles the Mouse, Cecil the Turtle and Goopy Geer. Note that Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd made their first cartoon appearances in 1940, so this poster likely has either the first or one of the very first depictions of both classic characters (because Warner Bros. did not make individual posters for their cartoons), and you can clearly tell by looking at both characters who they are, but their appearance changed somewhat over the next few years to what they remained for decades after! Of course, the greatest cartoon animators of all time worked at Warner Bros. at this time, including Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, and Bob Clampett, and all three worked on early Bugs Bunny cartoons! Also note that Warner Bros. at this time solely made stock posters like these for their cartoon series. They would print a number of paper snipes that measured 7 1/2" x 8", and those had the title of specific cartoons, along with an image from that cartoon, and theater owners could glue those snipes onto these stock posters. This poster has a square box in the bottom right at a slight diagonal, where theaters would attach one of those snipes. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this one-sheet (Merrie Melodies) is the poster Warner Bros. first created in 1941 as a stock poster for theaters showing Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies Looney Tunes animated cartoon shorts and featuring great early art of Bugs Bunny on a swing painting a sign, alongside several other characters including Elmer Fudd, Sniffles the Mouse, Cecil the Turtle and Goopy Geer. So there are no individual posters for any of these cartoons, but the next best thing is getting a stock one-sheet with the snipe for a specific cartoon. There is something else special about this poster. The 1941 version of this poster has "A Vitaphone Short Subject Produced by Leon Schlesinger" in the middle. In 1944, someone decided to change that to read "A Warner Bros. Short Subject", and they printed new posters, but they left the original small print on the bottom (although they stamped the back "1944/45"). We have only ever auctioned two of these one-sheets with the altered tagline, as opposed to 4 examples of the earlier version. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some minor wear on the foldlines. It had some tears and smudges around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
