A Linenbacked Travel Poster (measures 26" x 39 3/4" [66 x 101 cm]) (Learn More) American President Lines: Japan, the 1950s cruise ship travel poster designed to promote tourism to Japan aboard American President Lines cruise ships, and featuring art of Japanese inspired artwork. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster was never folded. It had many creases and scuffs scattered throughout, with some faint stains around the edges. When the poster was backed, the restorer painted over most of the lettering and most of the blank white background areas, to "even them out", and there was quite a bit of touch up required within the image (the poster was likely in "fair" condition at best prior to linenbacking). Either before or after it was backed, something occurred that caused surface paper loss in the left of the bottom border (see our image), and also tiny areas of surface paper loss scattered throughout the poster. Since there are other areas that are restored, we think it is much more likely that the damage occurred after it was backed. Certainly, the poster could have additional restoration performed, but bear this in mind before placing a bid on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
