An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked German Movie Poster (measures 38" x 56" [97 x 142 cm]) (Learn More)

Marcco: Der Bezwinger Des Todes (literally translates to "Marcco: The Vanquisher Of Death"), the 1925 Joe Stockel German silent kidnapping crime melodrama (about a former vaudeville strongman who goes around helping people in need, and in this movie, he is helping a family where their daughter was poisoned, and the antidote is locked in the safe, and only he has the strength to break it open) starring Joe Stockel (in the title role as Marcco), Georg H. Schnell, Gertrude McCoy, Lisa Deihle, and Karl Falkenberg. Note that this is one of several Marcco movies that Stockel directed and starred in. It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. Note that this was one of a series of German movies made between 1922 and 1926 with a lead character who was a former vaudeville strongman who helped people in need in each entry in the series. When the Italian Maciste movies became popular worldwide, there was an effort to do something similar with these movies with their Marcco character, but it never caught on, and the series ended in 1926.
Artist: Victor Aden
Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this German poster (with great surreal art of a literal death trying to take a poisoned child from the hands of the hero), which is a very rare "country of origin" poster from Germany before World War II. There are very few German movie posters from before World War II in existence (because of the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II), and most of those few are in museums. Not only is this the only poster from this movie we have ever auctioned, but we have also never auctioned any of the posters from any of this series of movies starring Marcco!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tears and areas of paper loss along all the folds and in the borders. The entire poster had darkened somewhat, and it had pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
