A 1949 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

The Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 Victor Fleming family magical fantasy adventure musical ("MGM's miracle musical show of shows!"; "It's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Technicolor triumph!"; "Magnificent in its brilliant Technicolor splendor!"; "At Last It's Here Biggest Sensation Since "Snow White"!"; "The mighty miracle show that is the talk of America!"; "Amazing sights to see! The Tornado, Munchkinland, Horse of a Different Color, Startling Balloon Ascent, The Flying Monkeys, The Tree That Throws Apples"; "Gaiety! Glory! Glamour!"; based on the classic book of the same name by L. Frank Baum; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Judy Garland (as Dorothy), Frank Morgan (in the title role as The Wizard of Oz!), Ray Bolger (as The Scarecrow), Bert Lahr (as The Cowardly Lion), Jack Haley (as The Tin Man), Billie Burke (as Glinda, the Good Witch), Margaret Hamilton (as the Wicked Witch), Charley Grapewin, "The Munchkins", and Toto too! Note that MGM was worried about how well this movie would do at the box office, and they did something we don't remember seeing on any other major movie advertising! One of the taglines says "Biggest sensation since Snow White", which means MGM was advertising a Walt Disney movie, but that shows just how worried they were! Of course, they needn't have worried, because this was a timeless classic that has only improved with age.

Important Added Info: Note that this all time classic was NOT recognized as such when it was first made in 1939. Everyone realized it was a good movie, but it only about broke even on its first release in the U.S. (it was better received in Europe and South America). It was ten years later that the movie was first re-released in the U.S. (after releases throughout Europe, and even a re-release in England!), but it was not until this 1949 re-release that it finally became profitable for MGM. Of course, its popularity only continued to grow and grow, as new generations discovered it, and it was re-released again just six years later in 1955, and there have been countless re-releases (in theaters and on TV) ever since. Note that the poster features an image of Judy from "Meet Me In St. Louis" and it also says "AN MGM MASTERPIECE REPRINT" in the bottom left corner. This was a terminology used by MGM at this time for some re-releases, and it has caused some collectors to be confused! This poster is the original poster from the 1949 re-release of this movie, and is NOT a "reprint"!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small paper loss at the top crossfold and tiny paper loss and tears at the bottom crossfold, with minor wear on the foldlines. It had pinholes in the corners. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
